RENOWNED FOR HIS STARTS - Moss is already underway at the start of the 1953 Tourist Trophy at Dundrod, before anyone else.

TAKING THE CHEQUER - Mairesse crosses the finish line in first place in a Ferrari shared with Mexican, Ricardo Rodriguez.

SPEEDING AROUND THE ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE - Taruffi drove an impeccable race to win the 1957 Mille Miglia, his crowning glory.

REFUELLING BEFORE RETIREMENT - Von Trips sits patiently in his Porsche 718 RSK, before retiring on the penultimate lap.

1-2 FOR FERRARI - Von Trips in '532' and Taruffi in '535' famously took a great victory in the last ever Mille Miglia, after de Portago and Nelson crashed killing themselves and a number of spectators.

BRESCIA - The 'British' Austin-Healey' attracts a mixed response from the ardent Italian crowd - sadly this pretty little car failed to finish in 1956.

SLIPPERY WHEN WET - Fangio begins to slide the 290 MM as he grimaces in anticipation, but still managed to finish fourth overall in the classic round Italy road race of 1956.

VANWALLS - A line-up of Vanwalls to the rear, whilst in the foreground is a solitary Cooper for Roy Salvadori.

POWERING THROUGH A HILLTOP VILLAGE - Guichet had a great year in 1964 winning Le Mans, but retiring from this 'classic'.

THE GREATEST ROAD RACE CIRCUIT - The legendary Targa Florio of 1958 was won by the Italian, Musso and his Belgian teammate, Gendebien.

CORNERING HARD AT THE TARGA - The Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ appears to have its windscreen wipers taped to the screen, clearly expecting a dry race.

ASTON MARTIN DB3 - A curvaceous DB3 is fettled and re-fuelled during the Tourist Trophy of 1953, held in Northern Ireland.

TWISTY STREETS - Coco and Arena power through the streets on their way to a highly commendable seventh overall and first in class at the 1962 Targa Florio.

ALL HANDS TO THE PUMP - The super Porsche 356B Carrera Abarth GTL finished sixth overall, first in class at the 1960 Targa Florio.

SPRINTERS! Rolt makes a decent attempt at a sprint, but nothing compared to the 'hare' Moss.

ITALIAN MASTER, VACCARELLA, DRIFTS THROUGH A SICILIAN VILLAGE - Nino and teammate Bonnier finished third at the 1962 Targa Florio in their bright orange Porsche 718 GTR.

THREE SECONDS TO THE OFF - Scarlatti and Ferraro finished the ten lap race in fourth overall after seven and a quarter hours of hard racing, in their gorgeous 250 GTO.

BATTERED REMAINS AND THE VICTOR - Number 150 did not start the 1962 Targa Florio, but the Dino 246 SP (152) of Mairesse, Rodriguez and Gendebien did win the round the island 'classic'.

BLUE AND YELLOW FOR SWEDEN - This 250 GTO finished ninth overall and first in class at the Targa of '64.

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM - The gorgeous Ferrari 250 TR 58 awaits the off before finishing first in the hands of Musso and Gendebien at the 1958 Targa Florio.
