Original Stirling Moss Gear Knob as used at the 1961 Monaco GP

An absolutely amazing piece of motor racing history. This is the original gear knob fitted to and removed from the R. R. C. Walker Lotus 18. Most notably, the car was raced by Stirling Moss and famously won the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix, against the might of a squadron of Ferrari 156 Sharknose’s. Still considered by the late Sir Stirling Moss as his ‘best F1 drive’, as evidenced by the black and white signed-on photograph (available separately).

This gear knob was removed by Alf Francis, Stirling’s long time mechanic, whilst he worked on the car at the Pippbrook Garage at Dorking, home of the Rob Walker racing team.

Stirling Moss is widely regarded as one of the greatest driver’s never to win the Formula One World Championship. He finished runner-up on four consecutive occasions and third on three consecutive seasons. He won sixteen Formula One Championship races and regularly competed in other machinery during a Grand Prix weekend. He was a sportscar ‘ace’ and finished second at the 1953 and 1956 Vingt Quatre Heures du Mans. However, Moss is best known for his exploits at the 1955 Mille Miglia, winning that race with co-driver Denis Jenkinson and driving in to racing folklore.
