David Piper Le Mans Race Used Helmet
This David Piper helmet, made by Bell was race used during the late sixties and early seventies. This helmet comes with a signed information sheet from the BOAC International 500 held at Brands Hatch in 1967. Piper and teammate Richard Attwood finished seventh in their Maranello Concessionaires entered Ferrari 412 P. Further evidence of this helmet being used can be found in the 312 P book by McKlein where Piper is seen at the 1969 Vingt Qatre Heures du Mans in the Ferrari 312 P that he shared with Pedro Rodriguez. This helmet makes a further photographic appearance at the Daytona 24 Hours, again in the Ferrari 312 P that he shared with Tony Adamowicz.
This helmet features an original Mantorp Park Sweden sticker and David has signed to the rear of the helmet. Piper raced at Mantorp Park in 1969 in the Nordic Challenge Cup, where he finished fourth in a Lola T70 Mk. 3B GT.
David was known as one of Ferrari’s most successful privateers in sportscars, but raced in Formula One driving a Lotus in the 1959 and 1960 seasons. At Le Mans he finished third in class, sixth overall in 1963 driving a North American Racing Team Ferrari 250 GTO/LMB. In 1968 he finished second in class, seventh overall in his own entered Ferrari 250 LM, sharing the BP green painted Ferrari 250 LM with Richard Attwood.
